                       We want you!……..to help shape the Library

Libraries aren’t cool. They aren’t the place to hang out. You would never risk spending time in one, who knows what it would do to you! Libraries are intimidating. All of those books staring down on you, daring you to be a better student, to think more, to have wider interests and have a cleverer vocabulary. The smell of old books, the dark looming shelves….na, I’m not going to the Library.

This is an insight into the minds of many school students. But who said it has to be like this? This idea of the intimidating Library needs to become a thing of the past. Libraries that are nothing but silent storehouses for outdated ideas and books do not suit the 21st Century student; they don’t suit you!

-You want a place in your school that is comfortale and easy to walk into; a place where you feel safe and secure to learn in whatever manner suits you best. A place that will support your learning, but not with a teacher looming over you, but rather in a way that you can control and optimise.

-You want to study with your iPod in your ears and your mobile phone sitting by your right hand, because this suits you.

-You want the opportunity to have a chat to your friends around you that are studying, because you can’t focus for too long on one thing, and need to speak out your thoughts to make sense of them.

-You don’t want to be always told to “Shhhhh”, or “put your feet on the floor” or “don’t sit like that, you’ll ruin your posture”. You know how you study best, and your physical position effects your thoughts therefore all you want to do is slouch in an easy chair with your book on your lap.

-You want the information at your fingertips. You want direction and advice on which novel to read, now. Not after 100 pages of trialing it, but in a quick few minutes of researching it. You want to be informed about the the resources available to you and the best way that you can utilise them.

-But above all, you do want to be a better learner. You want to impress people with your knowledge and use of long words. You want to achieve things and have purpose in your life at school and after you finish school, but you want to do this on your own terms. Not in a ‘here is the content to be learned, now you learn it’ type way, but in an empowering, self-motivated way, and in the area of your passions and interests.

In consideration of you, the 21t Century learner, I hearby declare war on the old-school perception of Libraries, and ask you to involve yourself in the shaping of a new direction for our school Library.
